PeriferifestivalenThe festival season is nearly over, so one cannot be choosy where to go on a festival. Nearly last chance to see Kaizers: Periferifestivalen! But limiting the festival down to this, indeed excellent, concert would be a mistake, for it was quite some more.

Periferifestivalen is a very small festival, situated in Glesvær on the island Sotra, about 45 minutes drive southwest of Bergen. It was sold out, which meant that roughly 2500 people were there each day. The festival area was situated right within the dockside of the little fisher village, with fisher houses to the left and right, two lovely cafes and a boathouse, which made up one of the coziest venues I’ve ever seen (and they didn’t clean up much before…).

The main area had plenty of space though and was decorated with buoys hanging from the trees. There was no festival camping, but some visitors came by boat and there was, as far as I could see it, quite a party going on in the harbor. The weather was very good (Friday) and typically West-Norwegian (Saturday). Periferifestivalen is a unique and small festival, with a very intimate & friendly atmosphere.

Friday, August 24th

PeriferifestivalenThe festival started on Friday with just a handful of people showing up for Anja Viken. It seemed that many had decided to enjoy the good weather just a little more and thus missed this show. These people missed a performance that I personally enjoyed a lot. Anja Viken plays some decent Norwegian pop/rock, somehow reminding me of Avril Lavigne (which is rather a compliment for Avril than for Anja, I guess). The faster songs instantly made you bopping along while you could concentrate on Anja’s voice during the slower ones. The young Norwegian seemed to be rather shy with the audience, but that’s perfectly understandable when you have to open up a festival (and no one seems to take interest yet). Anja Viken was a pleasant surprise to start with and some of their songs (especially “Gatekredibilitet” and “Klæssar deg ned”) stuck in my head for quite some time.

PeriferifestivalenAfter that I decided to go into the boathouse to watch at least some minutes of Stein og Mari, who played in a jazzy, blues, folk-music style. What I experienced then was a very unique concert. The duo managed to create an intense atmosphere, in which Mari’s voice merged beautiful with whatever instrument her partner just played (he changed a lot from guitar to mandolin, other string instruments and even to a zither in the end). But sometimes the songs were nearly too slow and quiet. So you could not only literally hear a pin drop, but even whenever somebody in the audience got a text message you could hear that very well, too. A very interesting and beautiful concert in the boathouse nevertheless and, what I didn’t know at the time, it was the only concert of the evening programs in the boat house where I was able to get in. The 200-300 spare places were usually taken long before a band started, and the queues outside were very long.

PeriferifestivalenNext on the list was Lars Vaular, a rapper from Bergen, Spellemanspris winner, and, as many told me, the real co-headliner on Friday. He was eagerly awaited by his fans, and the main stage was packed for the first time. I’m not a big fan of rap music, but I have to admit that he got some catchy songs and the crowd, now containing mostly the younger parts of the audience, was enthusiastic. At least after Vaular played “Eg e fra Bergen” as third song (Some local patriotism had not harmed any artist, did it?), he had the hands up in the air and the crowd on his side. Vaular belongs to the gangsta rap genre, but the Norwegian version of that is far away from what is known from MTV. To me he seemed like a very nice, modest and likeable guy, and he and his fellow musicians obviously had some fun on stage. Especially Tarjei Strøm on the drums delivered quite a show as well. When the concert was over, the fans demanded Vaular’s  hit single “Solbriller på” (and of course did not get it, as only the headliners were entitled to play encores) for some minutes before the crowd scattered.

PeriferifestivalenI missed the next concert in the boathouse and decided to have a beer instead. While enjoying it, I got to know some Norwegians that were pretty undecided on the question “is the next band famous?”. (Quote: “Well you could know them if you knew Norwegian music well, but you really do not have to… They are kind of local heroes from the Bergen area, you know?”) They taught me that the next band, Jan Olav Nilsen & Gjengen, was mainly known for their kline-låt songs (make out songs). Well that seemed to be enough to fill up most of the space in front of the stage, but the atmosphere was kind of quiet and not so enthusiastic as you might think that it should be while the co-headliner performs. (And I did not see any people making out, thank God!) To me, Jan Olav Nilsen & Gjengen had a strong 80ies touch and reminded me a bit of The Cure there and a bit of U2 (80ies U2 that is, of course) here. It was a nice decent concert and many people enjoyed it, but there was not that jumping and celebrating that Kaizers or DumDum Boys managed to pull off. But maybe the audience wanted just to spare some energy for Kaizers Orchestra. 😉

With Kaizers, the first day of Periferifestivalen found a perfect ending. The report on them by Susi can be found on kaizers.konzertjunkie.com. I just have to add that Kaizers is the only band that gives me a smile on my face from the very first second of the intro until two or three days later, come what may…

PeriferifestivalenThe second day in Glesvær was divided into a day program, which was especially intended to be for families, and a night program, with Sivert Høyem and the DumDum Boys being the headliners.

After some improv in the boathouse (which was funny but would have probably been funnier if I had understood more Norwegian than I actually do), the first band to see was Jens Brun & De Hattmakers. They are a band for kids (and their parents) that plays classical pop/soul/funk songs, but rewrites the lyrics to make them more suitable for children. So James Brown’s “Sex Machine” became Kjeksmaskin (cookie machine), for example. I watched the Norwegian Raffi for some time and the kids loved it (or were told so, by their parents), but after 15 minutes of soul & funk I decided that I was either too young or too old for this and gladly turned my attention to the boathouse and the three young bands that were supposed to play there, each of them getting 15 minutes of time.

PeriferifestivalenIn the boathouse, I saw three very interesting concerts that I enjoyed a lot. Although all three bands being rock bands, they differed very much. Opening up were No Fuel, obviously the youngest of the three bands. The singer definitely is a future rock star to be, knowing how to entertain a stage. It didn’t matter to him that the audience, which seemed to consist mainly of parents and relatives, was seated and was probably not really knowing what was coming at it. No Fuel’s singer jumped around, high-fived the front row and just spread energy and a good mood. A very refreshing concert, and it was not a problem that the rock/punk rock played by No Fuel had some horrible transitions and other flaws since you should expect that from such a young band. Keep on rocking guys, you’re on the right track!

After three songs, No Fuel made way for Hvitmalt Gjerde. Susi and I had quite a discussion about that concert, as I found them to be really good, while Susi kind of disliked the behavior of the singer and the band. Musically it was a bit like Chuck Berry meeting Oasis. The singer was very energetic and conveyed a good rock’n’roll vibe. But while he was completely freaking out, the rest of the band seemed either bored or annoyed (or just nervous?). I think nevertheless that Hvitmalt Gjerde with their ability to sound 60ies and modern at the same time did an incredibly good job.

PeriferifestivalenThe last band in the boathouse was Grandma’s Tea Party, whom I liked from the beginning, as the first thing they did was to put some nice decoration on the stage (some flowers, tea, pictures and a cupboard – well they call themselves Grandma’s Tea Party for a reason!). The band appeared dressed up neatly in early 20th century style, that just brought some coolness on the stage naturally. Grandma’s Tea Party played some very decent indie rock, supported by a very good guitarist (who at one stage climbed the cupboard to play a solo. And guitarists climbing things are very well welcomed among Kaizers fans). It was catchy and musically flawless. The only thing you could criticize was the singer, who was just too shy and even too quiet for the music played around him. But maybe it was still the impression of the screaming Hvitmalt Gjerde singer, what led me to that conclusion.

PeriferifestivalenI only took a swift look at Sgt. Petter med Band, which played some Southern Rock and had a tambourine player whose role in the band remained a mystery to me. But maybe we just came during the wrong song. It started to rain while they were playing, and nearly immediately, rain capes were offered by a nice old man walking around the main stage. (Big “Thumps up!” for that.) As it started to rain and as we were not too excited by what we heard anyway, we decided to go for a coffee break in the lovely café. With Sgt. Petter med Band, the day program ended and everybody had to leave the festival area for an hour. I passed the hour lying on the rocks above Glesvær harbor, dozing away to the sounds of the party taking place on the boats lying in the harbor. The fact that good old Freddie Mercury was played there with great endurance and loudness made it clear that the audience warming up for tonight’s concerts was notably older than yesterday.

PeriferifestivalenHaving really dozed away, I came too late to see Solveig Slettahjell, who played in the boathouse. But while I was waiting, Marit Larsen and her band were performing their sound check on the main stage, right in front of the handful of spectators who happened to be around by accident. I found it to be very interesting to see such a sound check (some of the songs got played for up to two minutes), and Marit Larsen, who either played guitar or piano, was smiling all the time, so she might have enjoyed it as well. After nearly half an hour she finished, went off the stage, just to get on again 10 minutes later. As it was still early in the day (6 pm), there were not as many people as I expected to be, but the ones who were there were very easily caught by Marit Larsen, her neat pop songs and the joy she and her band had on stage. Marit Larsen, best known for her hit “If a song could get me you”, is the Norwegian Queen of Pop, who plays radio-suitable, romantic pop songs. Though that might not be very unique, it is the joy and excitement that Marit Larsen conveys that made this concert special. You could see teenage boys, wearing some party shirts, dreaming away in the first row, enchanted by the music and Marit Larsen. There were a lot of smiling faces in the audience (notably male), and the whole gig was just very likable.

PeriferifestivalenNext on the main stage was Magnet, which is the pseudonym of Bergen singer and songwriter Even Johansen. The festival guide recommended him as “having invented an own genre by himself”. That’s kind of true, but unfortunately I found that genre to be pretty boring. There is not much happening on- or off-stage during his performance, and the songs somehow tend to sound all alike. His folk/rock/song-writer music, with some electronic influence here and there, had some great lyrics and he created an intense wall of sound from time to time, but the last explosion, the last little bit to make a song exciting, was always missing. That did of course not bother the fans in the first few rows, who were enthusiastically waving signs and were cheering along. The rest of the crowd though reacted rather cool and was even irritated when Johansen imitated Janove Ottesen and the Kaizers-Halleluja scream. (I still do not know if that was supposed to be some mockery or some serious effort.) Halfway through the concert, I decided to go the boathouse to wait for Stein Torleif Bjella, but as many others also had this idea, the queue was already way too long. (There were even still more than hundred people queuing an hour later, when the Stein Torleif Bjella concert was supposed to finish in five minutes.) So I followed some more minutes of the Magnet concert, before we decided to have some pancakes in the warmth of the cafe and to wait for Sivert Høyem. In the café we came to talk to a nice Norwegian couple which was also very much looking forward to see Sivert. The big question that arose was “Will he play some old Madrugada songs?”, and we both were pretty sure that he probably wouldn’t. Well how wrong we were!

PeriferifestivalenSince after some very weird intro (feat. German Krautrockers Amon Düül II, from the 70ies) and two rather unspectacular songs, Sivert Høyem played “Look away Lucifer”, which gave the whole concert a new direction. Before that, it seemed the crowd was reserved, maybe hoping for Madrugada songs but not knowing what to expect. After a first Madrugada song, it feeled like everybody was relieved and now able to really enjoy the concert. In the end, Høyem played three Madrugada songs, cleverly inserted at times when the mood of the crowd was lowering. Before “Majesty”, which was just magnificent and very well received, having all of the audience singing along, he sent away his band, explaining that the next song would be too difficult for them to play. After a very long and wild applause after “Majesty”, Sivert had a big smile on his face, which he kept from then on, throughout the entire show. “The kids are on high street” was the 3rd Madrugada song played, also wildly received by the crowd. But though he played these songs (and the crowd loved him for that), this was not a Madrugada concert and Høyem’s own songs, notably “Into the sea” or “Moon Landing”, led also to big singing and shouting. He performed with such an energy that it was really a pleasure to watch, and his incredible voice sounds better than ever. Høyem was supported by some of the finest Norwegian musicians (festival guide wrote: supergroup!) amongst others Catu Salsa on guitar and Christer Knutsen on guitar/keyboard.

PeriferifestivalenEspecially the latter made quite an interesting appearance. Musically absolutely brilliant he switched between keyboards and guitar and contributed a lot to the strong sound of the band. But being real rock’n’roll he looked pretty spaced out during most times of the concert and staggered across the stage during others. He definitely does not look healthy anymore…

Anyway, Sivert’s and his band’s performance on Periferi was great and you could also feel and see how pleased they were about this performance themselves. After the last song (“Red on maroon”), which he sang on his knees and with the microphone stand being thrown down the aisle, Sivert was smiling, bowing and waving and looked pretty happy. And so was I.

PeriferifestivalenThe honor to close the festival was given to the DumDum Boys, a true Norwegian institution difficult to compare with anything else. But after some thinking it seemed to us that every country has its own DumDum Boys: one hard rock/rock/punk band that has been there since 25+ years and has songs everybody knows since they were a little child. (In Germany this would suit for “Die Toten Hosen”.) Somebody told me: “They are a, no, THE partyband.” The concert and the music, which was probably the more entertaining the better you spoke Norwegian, was not entirely to my liking, as I thought some of the songs to be rather weak and monotonous. But the reaction the band had on the rest of the crowd was tremendous. Everybody, from teenager to grandma (yep, I had two lovely grandmas dancing next to me) was singing along, and especially the generation 40+ was really having a blast. From the very first row till the last people sitting on the green next to the FOH, everybody was shouting and singing to the well-known lyrics. The singer performed a classical rock show including all the hard rock poses one can imagine. He tore down his shirt to the end of the regular set, just to come with a new shirt to the encores, when he tore it down again. As I said before, the people really loved it and many said to me afterwards, that that was one of the best concerts they had seen in years. So although not my personal favorite, the DumDum Boys were a great last band for the festival and left everybody very happy.

PeriferifestivalenSo after two days out in the Norwegian wild we set sail southwards again (would be lovely to actually really come by boat – next time…). Tired but happy. Periferifestivalen was a wonderful experience, with friendly people, some very nice bands, an absolutely unique venue in the boathouse and a very lovely festival area in the middle of the village.

StavernfestivalenKaizers Orchestra were playing in Stavern, on the weekend when I was in Norway anyway – a great opportunity to check out Stavernfestivalen! I had planned to go there a couple of years ago when Kaizers played there the last time, but in the end, it hadn’t worked out. This time, I planned ahead and made it happen – just for one day, but better than nothing, right?

I gotta admit though that Stavernfestivalen had a bit of a disadvantage. I came there right from Odderøya Live, a festival that was so well organized that it just basically blew my mind. Now, arriving at Stavernfestivalen, not really being sure which bus stop to get off and in which direction to walk to get there – hmm, not the most positive first impression you could have… =:-/ Getting in worked just fine, except that there were no lanyards left for the press passes – which is pretty inconvenient, you can’t just hold the pass in your hand all day, right? The guy at the accreditation booth was really helpful though and gave me his lanyard. Thanks a lot! StavernfestivalenAnd I guess that sums of a bit of the festival spirit – things often weren’t going the way they should, but people were trying to help where possible; just that sometimes, they just didn’t have a clue how… Which can be really charming, and I know quite a few festivals in Germany where it is just the same, but since I was so used to the professional organization from the festival before, it left a negative impression.

Next, I tried to find out if there were some photo rules or some kind of press area, which again took a lot of asking around and being sent from A to B to C and back to square one. And in the end, it turned out that I didn’t really need any of it, because the main stage was so high up that there was no chance to take any good pictures from the aisle in front of the stage anyway. Well, but then it was allowed to take photos throughout the whole night from anywhere else, so I just skipped the first three songs in the aisle… =;-)

StavernfestivalenOn the first days, there were a lot of complaints about too few toilets on the festival grounds – guess they got that fixed up before Saturday. Hardly any queues whatsoever, and I thought it was rather funny to have the Dixies out above the sea on a little pier… *g*

There was a huge selection of food on the festival – from Thai to Mexican to grilled meat and of course junk food. And also here, queues seemed reasonable (if you didn’t try to get your food right after one band had finished, of course…). The disadvantage here was the cashless system – you had to buy a “cashless card” for 50 kroner just to be able to buy anything on the festival grounds. Then you would load up the card with any amount, pay with it, and then get the rest of the money (minus the 50 kroner for the card) refunded in the end. IF you had a Norwegian bank account. If not, like me, you had to plan ahead thoroughly to make sure no money was left on the card…

StavernfestivalenThe festival grounds were so-so: There were two stages, both with enough space in front of them, and so high that you could see without problems – if you weren’t standing too close, that is. =;-) Very nice were some “natural stands” with stone boulders in the back, where people could sit and enjoy the concerts. The bad part, however, was that there was just one narrow way to the big stage, where everybody had to walk… And of course that one was really crowded, and people gathered on this side of the stage because it was hard to make it to the other side. You couldn’t get to the other side from the back, because the VIP area blocked the way. Not a good arrangement, in my opinion… =:-/

StavernfestivalenTwo stages is a great idea, in general. However, if there are two stages, I would expect a continuous program. Not sure if there were just delays or if this was how it was planned, but there were always long breaks between the shows on the two stages. In my opinion, it doesn’t necesaarily make sense to have two stages then…

All this might sound really negative, but all in all, Stavernfestivalen is a nice festival. Even though a few things were a bit chaotic, others were organized perfectly – the night busses, for example, or the food and drinks. And it seemed like the audience was really enjoying themselves, and this is the most important part, of course! Even though the size of the festivals probably didn’t really differ a lot, Stavernfestival seemed much smaller than Odderøya Live – Odderøya Live was the “professional” festival, Stavernfestival the slightly improvised, local festival, with its own festival spirit.

Well, and now I wrote a full festival report without even writing about the music! =;-) But I’ll keep that short as well, because I was quite busy throughout the day and only got to see parts of the shows.

StavernfestivalenBjørn Eidsvåg was playing rather early in the day, but a lot of people showed up for his concert. And everyone seemed to have lots of fun! No wonder, since he managed to capture the crowd not only by his songs, but also by his stories inbetween. That’s what a headliner has to do, right? And the headliner is the artist who plays on the big stage first, right? =;-) And he took care of us: “Before Kaizers and Bernhoft tonight, you’ll first get some decent music now!”

Next up on the big stage was The Soundtrack of our Lives. Very nice and entertaining music, but unfortunately, there weren’t as many people in the audience as they would have deserved. Still, a great show!

I pretty much missed Jarle Bernhoft after that, but judging from what I had seen at Odderøya Live and what the crowd seemed like from afar, he had a huge audience and delivered another pompeous concert.

StavernfestivalenDen Svenska Björnstammen played on the small stage right before Kaizers played on the big one, and they gathered a huge crowd with their party music. Nice to watch, and a great warm-up for the headliner!

Concluding the day and the whole festival, Kaizers Orchestra played an amazing concert and convinced everyone why they are Norway’s best live band at the moment! You can read all about their concert in my full report on kaizers.konzertjunkie.com!

11-13.07.2012 Odderøya Live (Kristiansand)

The festival season is right around the corner! I didn’t write much about this year’s festivals yet, but that doesn’t mean that this summer will be boring concertwise. Oh no, not at all!

As always, there are lots of big and small festivals taking place in Norway. And as a rough estimate, you can probably say that all those festivals that did not have Kaizers Orchestra as headliner last year have them this year. =;-) Being the huge Kaizers fan that I am, of course I pick my festivals according to where Kaizers are playing. And for me, the most important factor when deciding which of the festivals to attend is not the location – it can be worth traveling to the middle of nowhere for an amazing festival – but the rest of the line-up. You want to have a great time on all days, not only the one when Kaizers are playing, right?

So this time, the choice was really easy: Odderøya Live in Kristiansand! The line-up speaks for itself: The first day of the festival features, amongst others, Raga Rockers from Norway and John Fogerty from the US. You might not know Raga Rockers when you are not into Norwegian music – but you miss out on something! Having been around for 30 years now, they are an “institution” in Norway. However, this will be their last tour; another reason not to miss their concert! For sure, Raga Rockers and John Fogerty will provide a great opening day for the festival.

Day two has, amongst others, Honningbarna, Jarle Bernhoft, and Kaizers Orchestra. Honningbarna is a young Norwegian punk rock band that has really taken off the last two years. Similarly Jarle Bernhoft – no, not regarding the “punk rock” part, but he also made it big in 2011, even being elected the “Spellemann” of the year, which is one of the highest music awards in Norway. And then there’s Kaizers Orchestra as headliner – a guarantee for a great concert with everyone in the audience singing along every single line of every song.

Last but not least, day three offers concerts by CC Cowboys and Roxette, and some more of course. CC Cowboys is another band that every Norwegian knows and loves. I saw them at a festival a couple of years ago, didn’t know any of their songs, and was captivated right away because they just manage to drag you along, even if you don’t know them. Amazing! This time, I know their songs, so I’m really looking forward to their show. I guess I don’t need to introduce Roxette – everyone knows their old hits, and they also have a new album out now, so I guess we’ll get a nice mixture of old and new.

So, thumbs up for this amazing line-up! And if that is not enough to convince you to pay Odderøya Live a visit – how about the location? The festival takes place in Kristiansand, in walking distance to the city center, so you can enjoy the city life and a festival at the same time. And all of this in the middle of July, where the chances that the weather will play along are highest. You might even be able to visit the beach before walking out to the festival for the night!

Getting to Kristiansand is easy – if you’re coming from abroad, you can fly directly to Kristiansand, or take the ferry from Hirtshals. Kristiansand is also on the train line from Oslo to Stavanger. There’s lots of hotel accommodation available, and in general, Kristiansand is worth a visit, especially in summer.

The ticket price for a festival pass is about 1500 NOK – this might seem a lot to Europeans, but for Norwegian standards, that is a very fair price. And well worth the money! There are also day passes available.

Odderøya LiveTime for another festival in Norway! Kristiansand, Norway’s “summer city”, is the perfect place for a summer festival – a great and easy to reach location, a huge potential audience, and of course lots of sun in the summer time! Starting in the nineties already, Kristiansand hosted Quartfestivalen, which featured huge international bands. After quite a few financial problems, Quart had to close down, and now the slightly smaller Odderøya Live festival took over.

This festival isn’t necessarily aimed at drawing lots of people from other cities or even from abroad – most acts are Norwegian (or at least Scandinavian) and play a wide variety of music, basically everything that is popular and on the radio. John Fogerty (Creedance Clearwater Revival), Kaizers Orchestra and Roxette as headliners – that covers quite a bit of ground! As a result, the festival audience is very heterogeneous; and on average quite a bit older than at other festivals. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing… =;-)

Odderøya LiveI had been to Kristiansand and Odderøya, the location of the festival, once before. What I remembered about the island (or rather peninsula) was that it was huge, long ways to walk to get anywhere, quite far to even get there. Hmm… I must have been tired the day I went for a walk there. =;-) Actually, the festival is just a few minutes walk from the city center, out in the green, in beautiful surroundings and with a view towards the sea. My first impression of the festival was very positive: a fairly big, square area with lots of space, slanting down towards the stage – which means that no matter where you are standing, you have a great view. Except for the hall hosting the bar and the toilets and a few meters in front of it, there’s only grass and gravel though… great for sitting, but let’s hope it doesn’t rain. =;-)

Day 1

Odderøya LiveThe first artist of the festival was Sordal. According to the information in the program, he has been playing in lots of very different bands ranging from prog rock and Norwegian pop to electronica – and you could hear that. While you could probably classify all his songs as “pop rock”, they were very varied. A very nice start into the festival!

Next up was Daniel Norgren from Sweden. He was advertised as “a mixture between Mississippi blues/country and Swedish forests” – hmm, okay? Sounds interesting. And it was! Daniel sang and played guitar and drums (at the same time of course) and was accompanied by stand-up bass and organ. His performance reminded me a bit of Jarle Bernhoft’s solo gigs – not necessarily considering the musical style, but from the way he presented himself on stage. Odderøya LiveVery enigmatic and enthusiastic; it showed how much he enjoys playing music.

Both bands were perfect warm-ups for the evening. The area slowly started to fill up – very slowly though, I guess most people were planning to arrive in time for Raga Rockers. However, those who were there already were sitting on the ground, enjoying the music and relaxing in the sun.

Yes, there was sun! Even though the weather forecast hadn’t been the best, there was no rain and the sun came out in the afternoon. The perfect conditions for a festival!

Odderøya LiveWhen it was time for Raga Rockers, it had filled up quite a bit – still far from full, but a good crowd. I was suprised, however, that most people were still stitting down – I mean, Raga Rockers is a rock band! If you’re not into Norwegian music, you probably don’t know them, but they are one of the “big four” of Norwegian music and have quite a cult status. And rightly so! Their songs are very catchy, and you have to stand and dance and jump around to enjoy them… =;-)

However, I got to admit that I was a bit disappointed by their concert. The setlist was good, the music was great, the sound was pretty bad in the beginning but got better – but I was missing the energy on stage. OK, the band members aren’t the youngest anymore, and this might be their last tour. However, they were barely moving on stage, which killed the atmosphere in my opinion. It didn’t reflect in the music, fortunately, so when you closed your eyes the concert was just as captivating as I had expected, but I really would have hoped to see that on stage as well. A bit of a pity! But still great to get to see them. The audience got more and more into it throughout the concert – by the last few songs, most people were on their feet and singing along, so Raga Rockers managed to capture the audience without even moving. =;-) That’s a bit of a feat to accomplish as well!

Odderøya LiveHeadliner of the night was John Fogerty. Honestly, I had never heard that name before the festival, but of course I had heard the name Creedance Clearwater Revival – and that is basically John Fogerty. So I expected an old-style rock’n’roll concert, and that’s just what we got! He came on 20 minutes late, but played almost two hours. And only hits in the end, of course!

There was quite a crowd by the time John Fogerty came on – maybe not quite sold out, but a huge audience. As expected, the average age was a bit higher than at other festivals; no wonder considering the headliner. But there were quite a few younger people in the audience as well, and both young and old were enjoying the show and singing along loudly. The few rain drops in the middle of the set couldn’t ruin the atmosphere, and this concert was clearly the highlight of the first day.

Day 2

Odderøya LiveThe program of the second day was completely different from the one of the first day. Aimed at a much younger audience, we got a “radio hits day” today. At first, it looked like nobody was interested in the first act of the day – by the time Gabrielle was supposed to start, the area was entirely empty. However, it turned out that she had arrived late, so the start of the concert had to be moved back a bit, and the doors hadn’t opened yet.

Once the first people started coming in, it filled up really nicely, and as expected, the audience was a lot younger. The first row was filled entirely by teenagers. Behind them, everyone was enjoying a nice start into the festival, again relaxing in the sun and listening intently.

Odderøya LiveGabrielle came on about 20 minutes late. She got a few radio hits in Norway, and the audience seemed very positive about her show. Norwegian pop, accompanied by two keyboards and drums, and a great voice. A nice way to start into the festival!

Next up was LidoLido. Again, clearly aimed at a younger audience – he’s a rapper, with a full backing band. LidoLido himself is fairly young and seemed like a really likeable guy. He also included some “citations” of well-known international songs into his show, and it seemed like he managed to convince not only the kids that had gathered in front of the stage, but also the rest of the crowd that was still enjoying the sun. My only criticism: too much bass. But as LidoLido pointed out, you can never have enough bass, so I guess that was intended. =;-)

Odderøya LiveObviously, not only the audience was quite a bit younger today compared to yesterday – also the average age on stage was much lower. The next band on stage was Honningbarna – young guys (actually from Kristiansand!) playing punk music, who got hugely popular in Norway during the last two years. And rightfully so! I hadn’t managed to see them live yet, I had just heard they were quite a rip-off of Skambankt, another Norwegian band. And yep, in a way that is true, but they do add their own elements to the music. The singer plays a cello during some songs, and while his singing might not be the best, he brings the lyrics across. In addition, everyone is always in motion; lots of energy on stage, which is great to watch! They had their own little fanclub gathered in front of the stage, who were really into the concert and were singing along enthusiastically. Add constant “Barna! Barna!” choirs to that and you have an amazing show!

Odderøya LiveYesterday, after the Raga Rockers concert, I posted on Facebook: “Let’s start a band and play Raga Rockers songs the way they should be played!” Guess I was late with my idea… Honningbarna ended their set with “Noen å håte”, THE Raga Rockers song, and they performed it in the way I would have expected it to be presented yesterday. Both thumbs up for Honningbarna!

Next it was time for Jarle Bernhoft. I knew him because he warmed up for Kaizers Orchestra on their last European tour – back then he was playing solo, all alone on stage, imitating all instruments by himself. This time, he was playing with his band – an 11-piece orchestra. Very impressive, especially with the lights and theatralic backdrop. All in all, it was completely different than what I knew of him; actually, I hardly recognized some of his songs. But it was great, and the audience loved it! Pure pop, but with a full band, with background singers and brass… revue style. Totally different from all the other concerts so far on the festival.

Odderøya LiveA lot of people in the audience regarded Bernhoft as the headliner of the night – but I assume they were convinced by the REAL headliner, Kaizers Orchestra. As always, they delivered a captivating show, playing their hits and some special extras, and really getting the audience involved. When they played their biggest hit Hjerteknuser, everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) was waving their hands in the air… beautiful! Day 3

Hmm… I might be repeating myself, but the third day started just like the other days: with clear blue sky, bright sunshine, and everyone sitting in the grass, enjoying the music. Just perfect! =:-)

Odderøya LiveThe first artist on stage was Hanne Kolstø. Switching between guitar, keyboard, and tambourine, using samples and loops, accompanied just by one guy on guitar and keyboards, she delivered a great show. She definitely managed to captivate everyone who had made it to the festival grounds already, just by her presence on stage. In the beginning it was still rather empty, but Hanne quickly found out that everyone in the front was there to see Roxette, the headliner of the night. They were from Spain and Germany – and since Hanne didn’t want to leave them out, she started talking in Norwegian and English between the songs, until she got an OK from the Norwegians to continue in English only. =;-) One example of how she made the audience relate to her – she really had a wonderful presence on stage, very likable.

Odderøya LiveI don’t want to continue with “in contrary to the next artist”, this would be mean. But unfortunately, it’s not that far off. Bertine Zetlitz played professional pop, with a full band, which was nice to listen to – but compared to Hanne Kolstø, she seemed like a bit of a “diva”. I guess that would have been different if she hadn’t played in exactly this slot. But she did, and it seemed like the audience enjoyed her show, but it was much more distant and professional than Kolstø’s show right before. At the end of her set, she tried to make the audience sing along, which worked so-so. But then, people were surprised when she suddenly went off, without even announcing her last song. A professional show, but with less heart than other artists, unfortunately…

Odderøya LiveNext it was time for another Norwegian “cult” band, namely CC Cowboys. Their disadvantage was that they didn’t really fit into the program of the day – they would have fit perfectly into the first day with Raga Rockers and John Fogerty. Since today was more of a “pop” day, they had a hard time, especially in the beginning. Also, they started off rather slow. Not sure if those were new songs that the audience didn’t know (I didn’t) or if they just decided to start it calmly and then build it up… but the first half of the concert didn’t really catch on. After that, however, they brought on all their hits and the audience got more and more excited. In the end, everyone was singing along and dancing, just the way it’s got to be!

Odderøya LiveA last break before the final headliner: Roxette! I had been looking forward to their show, but mostly because they are a band of my childhood. I didn’t really expect much, but I thought it would be cool to get to hear all the old songs again. And what can I say? I was totally flashed! Actually, I still knew the lyrics of most songs by heart, and it was incredibly nice to hear them live. The show was energetic – even though Marie’s illness is very obvious and she hardly moved on stage. Per and the rest of the band took care of that part. Her voice, however, was in great shape! They concluded the concert with Joyride, Listen to your heart and The Look, giant water balloons in the audience, and lots of energy on stage. Awesome!

The only downside to this last concert was the audience – while on the other days, most people were at the festival to enjoy the concerts, it seemed that this time the majority was there for the party and didn’t even care about the concert. They sang along during the most well-known songs, but apart from that, it was hard to enjoy the concert between all the talking and all the drunk people falling around. A pity! But fortunately, this was the only day this was noticeable this badly. And the great concert absolutely made up for it!

Odderøya LiveAll in all, Odderøya Live turned out to be a great festival. The whole organization of the festival was very professional, and everything was taken care of. The location is perfect – of course the weather played along, it might have been different with rain. But the way it was, it was a perfect summer festival.

Beforehand, it seemed a bit like the organizers were doubtful about the presales and about how many people would actually show up. They ended up with probably about 6000 a day, which is a great number! The atmosphere was great throughout the whole festival: During the days, everything was relaxed – sunshine, beer and music – and at night, there were amazing concerts and a crowd that was mostly into what was happening on stage. Thus the perfect mixture. Thanks Odderøya Live, see you next year! =:-D

Open Air GampelDer Festivalsommer geht langsam aber sicher zu Ende – das bedeutet, dass man (zumindest als Konzertjunkie) so ungefähr alle Bands, die im aktuellen Sommer auf Festivals unterwegs sind, schon mindestens einmal live erlebt hat. Im Allgemeinen ähneln sich die Line-Ups der verschiedenen Festivals doch sehr; und auch wenn es durchaus gute Seiten hat, seine Lieblingsbands immer wieder auf unterschiedlichen Festivals bewundern zu können – irgendwann nutzt es sich ab und man möchte auch mal was Neues sehen.

Und dann ist da das Open Air Gampel. Mit einem Line-Up, bei dem man zuerst mal überlegt, ob man im falschen Jahr gelandet ist – denn die Bands wirken so gar nicht “bekannt” für dieses Jahr. Allein die Headliner: Die Chemical Brothers, The Offspring und Seeed spielen zwar allesamt noch andere Konzerte, drängen sich aber nicht auf, indem sie – wie viele Headliner sonst – sowieso gerade überall unterwegs sind; sondern die Auftritte sind richtig schön exklusiv. Dazu dann noch Bands wie die Guano Apes, Skunk Anansie oder The Baseballs, die sich dieses Jahr doch eher rar gemacht haben. Aber auch einige “Vieltourer”, von denen man allerdings auch nicht genug bekommen kann, wie z.B. die Norweger von Kaizers Orchestra oder die Norwegerinnen von Katzenjammer. =;-)

Insgesamt also ein absolut rundes und spannendes Line-Up, für das man doch gerne den beschwerlichen Weg mitten in die Schweizer Alpen auf sich nimmt!

Das Open Air Gampel findet mitten im Wallis statt. Gampel, ca. zwei Stunden südlich von Bern gelegen, ist ein kleines Örtchen mit vielleicht 2000 Einwohnern – die sich zum Festival dann täglich verzehnfachen. Das viertägige Festival zieht jährlich um die 80.000 Besucher an! Und dieses Jahr läuft der Vorverkauf laut Veranstalterinfos sogar noch besser als sonst, sodass schon drei Wochen vor Festivalbeginn 60% der Tickets verkauft sind.

Alle Infos zum Festival und zu den auftretenden Bands gibt es auf openairgampel.ch. Tickets gibt es bei ticketcorner.ch, für einen Preis zwischen 59 CHF (Tagesticket Sonntag) und 199 CHF (4-Tages-Pass), jeweils plus Gebühren. Sicher nicht billig, aber für das Line-Up definitiv nicht überteuert!

Tag 1: “OK, we’re wasting time…” – “… but that’s the point!?”

“Einmal Gampel, immer Gampel” – so der Leitspruch des Festivals. Das muss natürlich überprüft werden!

Open Air GampelZum ersten Mal ging’s für mich zum (oh, Verzeihung, ANS natürlich!) Open Air Gampel in die Schweiz. Auslöser war natürlich der Auftritt von Kaizers Orchestra, aber auch das restliche Line-Up bot einige Schmankerl, weshalb ich beschloss, das ganze Festival mitzumachen und nicht nur den Kaizers-Tag. The Offspring, Katzenjammer, Guano Apes, Seeed, … wenn das nicht vielversprechend klingt!

Auf dem Hinweg stellte ich zuerst einmal fest, dass mein Navi Passstraßen mit der gleichen Geschwindigkeit berechnet wie normale, gut ausgebaute Landstraßen… die Folge war, dass ich nicht wie geplant zu Programmbeginn auf dem Gelände war, sondern erst kurz vor Ende des Auftritts von 77 Bombay Street. Was sehr schade war, denn die klangen super. Sehr eingängige Musik, die super zum sonnigen, heißen Sommernachmittag passte! Vor der kleinen Bühne herrschte Gedränge, das komplette Publikum war am Tanzen, Mitsingen und Feiern. So muss ein Festival-Auftakt aussehen!

Ähnlich ging es auch mit den Dropkick Murphys weiter. Diesmal allerdings auf der großen Bühne, daher wirkte es nicht so gedrängt vor der Bühne. Mir gefiel der Auftritt besser als beim Taubertal – die Band strahlte mehr Spielfreude aus, und das Publikum war begeistert am Tanzen.

Open Air GampelDanach war dann ein bisschen Zeit, um das Festivalgelände zu inspizieren. Und was soll ich sagen: wow! Die grundsätzliche Anordnung, mit den Campingplätzen rund ums eigentliche Festivalgelände, erinnert ein wenig ans Southside; das hat den Nachteil, dass man auch als Tagesbesucher (oder Autoschläfer =;-)) immer durch die Campingplatzkontrolle muss. Der Weg von dort bis zum eigentlichen Festivaleingang ist aber nicht weit. Wenn man dann aufs Festivalgelände kommt, sieht man zu allererst… eine Achterbahn! Und das beschreibt auch schon schön das ganze Gelände: ein großer Rummelplatz mit haufenweise Essens- und Getränkeständen, Musikzelten, Bierbänken und Ramsch-Lädchen. Und zwei Bühnen natürlich! Wunderbar, und kaum mit anderen Festivals vergleichbar. Vielleicht noch am besten mit dem Sziget in Ungarn – wobei das Sziget aber sehr viel größer und weitläufiger ist. Gampel wirkt doch trotz allem noch überschaubar; aber um die einzelnen Stände und Zelte abzuklappern, muss man durchaus Zeit einplanen. Und langweilig wird’s mit Sicherheit nicht!

Open Air GampelSchon Monate im Voraus war auf der Gampel-Webseite angekündigt: “Das Open Gampel 2011 wird sonnig und praktisch niederschlagsfrei!” Und das schien sich zu bewahrheiten – 30 Grad, strahlendblauer Himmel… nur was sind das für Wolken dahinten? Um es kurz zu machen: Es zog immer mehr zu, irgendwann kam der Regen, danach wurde es wieder schön – bis ein ordentliches Gewitter mit Platzregen folgte. Und wie das diesjährige Pukkelpop zeigte, geht das nicht immer so glimpflich aus… Das Gampel überstand aber zum Glück alles gut. Nicht mal Schlamm gab es danach, nur einige Pfützen. Und den Rest des Wochenendes blieb es dann komplett trocken.

Auf der großen Bühne standen NoFX auf dem Programm, die ich ja schon letzte Woche beim Taubertal gesehen hatte. Und auch hier lieferten sie wieder eine äußerst unterhaltsame Show ab! Wenn sie auch insgesamt ein wenig das Gefühl hatten, dass das Publikum sie – rein sprachlich – nicht verstand, da die meisten im Publikum doch ein wenig unsicher wirkten, wie sie auf diese Chaoten reagieren sollten. Nach einer Runde Quatschen auf der Bühne die Selbsteinsicht: “OK, we’re wasting time…” – “… but that’s the point!?” Na ja, eigentlich war der Point, das Publikum zum Tanzen zu bringen, und das schafften sie! Auch Crowdsurfer gab’s, sogar inklusive Rollstuhl, was natürlich einige Diskussionen auf der Bühne hervorrief. Und sie waren sich oft unsicher, welche Sprache hier denn nun angebracht wäre. Deutsch? Französisch? Italienisch? Am besten kam auf jeden Fall ihr “Champs Elysées” an – zumindest, bis sie “Creeping out Tegan” mit einem umgedichteten “Backstage at a festival in Switzerland…” begannen. Als Abschluss des Auftritts gab es dann noch eine Playback-Version von “Everyone’s a little bit racist”, zu der die komplette Band musicalmäßig den Text schauspielerte. Zum Schreien komisch! Echt genial, auch wenn auch hier im Publikum ziemlich viele fragende Gesichter zu sehen waren… =;-)

Publikum bei YellowcardAn der kleinen Bühne daraufhin die Überraschung des Abends für mich: Yellowcard. Der Name sagte mir ein bisschen was, und die Erwartung deckte sich auch genau mit dem, was sie geboten haben – ich weiß allerdings nicht mehr, woher ich den Namen kenne. Fakt war jedenfalls: Sie waren zum ersten Mal in der Schweiz, lieferten einen Wahnsinnsauftritt ab und brachten mit ihrem energievollen Rock (mit Geige!) das Publikum zum Hüpfen und Tanzen. Sie schienen verhältnismäßig bekannt zu sein – zumindest wurde lauthals mitgesungen. Und überhaupt feierte das Publikum jeden einzelnen Song, und noch mehr, als sie am Ende noch ein paar Lieder einschieben konnten, da sie sich mit der Setlist-Länge verkalkuliert hatten. Ein mitreißender Auftritt der Jungs aus Florida!

The OffspringDann war es Zeit für den Headliner, The Offspring. Und die lieferten einen… nun ja, irgendwie durchwachsenen Auftritt ab. Vielleicht war meine Erwartungshaltung zu hoch, vielleicht hätte ich mich vorab mehr mit ihrer aktuellen Musik beschäftigen sollen, vielleicht hätte ich vorher nicht den NoFX-Auftritt ansehen sollen… keine Ahnung. Für mich wirkte der Auftritt sehr lustlos. The Offspring standen nur rum, bewegten sich nicht und spielten ihre Stücke runter. Das ist an sich kein Kritikpunkt, das machen ja viele Bands so. Aber von den “Punkhelden meiner Kindheit” erwarte ich halt doch irgendwie mehr… zumal NoFX genau das geliefert haben, was ich auch von The Offspring erwartet hätte. Vermutlich war das wirklich die falsche Erwartungshaltung. Aber – nun das wichtige, große ABER – Spaß hat’s trotzdem gemacht! Denn ja, sie haben die ganzen alten Kamellen ausgegraben, und genau auf die hat das Publikum gewartet. Jedes dieser Lieder wurde abgefeiert. Und in der Hinsicht ist es auch voll und ganz verständlich, dass The Offspring ihre Konzerte eher “runterspielen”; denn nach so vielen Jahren will das Publikum offenbar immer noch nur “den alten Mist” hören. Mariachi El BronxUnd genau das war meine Einschätzung – The Offspring lieferten ohne allzu viel Herzblut das Konzert ab, das das Publikum hören wollte, und das Publikum feierte die Lieder, die es hören wollte. Mir fehlte einfach die Energie und Begeisterung auf der Bühne, schade. Eindrucksvoll war es aber dennoch, The Offspring mal live und in echt auf der Bühne erlebt zu haben! Und viel zu schnell war es auch schon vorbei…

Als Abschluss des Tages spielten auf der kleinen Bühne noch die Mariachi El Bronx – die Hardcore-Punk-Band The Bronx spielt Mariachi-Musik. Eine absurd lustige Idee, keine Frage! Die sich allerdings nach zwei Liedern dann auch abnutzt, in der Fußgängerzone will man ja schließlich auch keine Mariachi-Musik hören, also nutzte ich die Zeit, um noch ein wenig übers Gelände zu schlendern. Überall feiernde Menschen, Musik in den verschiedensten Stilrichtungen aus den Zelten und Bars, ein wunderbarer Sommerabend… klasse. Echt toll!

 

Tag 2: “Ich hasse deutsche Rockmusik – aber mein Englisch ist zu schlecht!”

Auch am zweiten Gampel-Tag strahlte die Sonne – so muss ein Sommerfestival aussehen! Zwar zog es sich auch diesmal einmal kurz zu, aber das wahrte nur kurz und war eher eine erfeuliche Abwechslung.

WirtzMusikalisch ging es auf der kleinen Bühne mit The Rambling Wheels los, die sich aus der Ferne super anhörten. Leider nur aus der Ferne; aber 12:15 ist für Festivals doch eine eher unchristliche Zeit…

Nach Berichtschreiben und -hochladen war dann Wirtz mein erster Programmpunkt. Den hatte ich beim Taubertal zum ersten Mal gesehen und war begeistert – so auch hier! Zwar passte der strahlende Sonnenschein nicht so ganz zu seinem Auftritt (ich vermute, das funktioniert in kleinen, schrammeligen Clubs noch deutlich besser als auf großen Open-Air-Bühnen), aber dennoch konnte er das Pulikum voll und ganz in seinen Bann ziehen. Und das, obwohl es sein erstes Konzert in der Schweiz war und so gut wie niemand je auch nur ein Lied von ihm gehört hatte. Am Ende wurde er trotzdem gefeiert! Und das, obwohl er doch deutsche Rockmusik verabscheut – “Aber mein Englisch ist zu schlecht!” Also singt er auf Deutsch und wird verstanden. Wäre auch schade, wenn nicht…

The RavenersDie darauffolgenden The Raveners sowie Rival Schools konnten mich nicht wirklich überzeugen, daher gibt’s von denen auch nur ein paar Fotos.

Mein Highlight des Festivals war natürlich der Auftritt von Kaizers Orchestra eine gute Stunde später. Und sie enttäuschten nicht! Zwar kannte sie offenbar kaum jemand im Publikum, aber der Platz vor der Bühne füllte sich recht gut, und am Ende waren alle am Singen und Tanzen. Erfolg auf der ganzen Linie! Damit war der Abend aber noch lange nicht vorbei! Auf der kleinen Bühne spielten direkt nach Kaizers Sound of Arrows, die ich mit ihrem Pop-Synthie-Whatever aber nur wenige Minuten ertrug. Absolut nicht meine Musik…

Skunk AnansieUnd dann war’s Zeit für Skunk Anansie. Ihr Auftritt hatte offenbar auf der Kippe gestanden, da sie am Tag zuvor beim Pukkelpop aufgetreten war und ihr Equipment in Mitleidenschaft gezogen worden war. Aber alles ging glatt, und sie konnte pünktlich auf die Bühne gehen. Ich habe sie schon mehrfach live gesehen – dennoch kenne ich von ihr (außer DEM Lied, versteht sich) eigentlich nichts. Das ist aber völlig unerheblich. Die Frau hat auf der Bühne eine solche Ausstrahlung, eine Präsenz, so viel Energie – man muss sie einfach lieben. Sie braucht eigentlich nur mit dem Finger schnippen, schon tanzt das Publikum und frisst ihr aus der Hand. Nicht, dass sie nur mit dem Finger schnippen würde – oh nein. Sie fegt über die Bühne, springt ins Publikum, läuft über die Hände, bringt das ganze Festival dazu, sich hinzusetzen und singt und schreit und hat das Publikum voll und ganz in der Hand. Unbeschreiblich eigentlich. Wunderbar!

The Chemical BrothersDen Abschluss des Tages bildeten The Chemical Brothers. Hmm. Nein, ich versteh es nicht. Ich habe wirklich versucht, ihnen dieses Mal noch mal eine Chance zu geben, obwohl sie mir live schon mehrfach nichts gegeben haben. Aber das ist einfach nicht meine Musik. Die Lichtshow war eindrucksvoll, das geb ich gerne zu. Aber nach einigen Minuten hat sich das abgenutzt, und da sich musikalisch nicht viel ändert und sich auch die Lightshow irgendwann wiederholt, verstehe ich einfach nicht, was daran so toll ist. Muss ich ja aber auch nicht. Tatsache ist, das Publikum feierte – nicht so sehr wie bei Skunk Anansie, so kam es mir vor, aber es schien zu gefallen, was die Chemical Brothers ablieferten. Und es muss ja nicht jeder alles mögen. Und so hatte ich immerhin Zeit, meine Berichte fertig zu schreiben, das ist doch auch praktisch. =;-)

 

Tag 3: “Seid Ihr zu kalt? Hier friert es ein bisschen!”

FavezDer dritte Tag – und unverändert tolles Sommerwetter. Es funktioniert also wirklich, die Sonne herbeizuschreiben! Kaum eine Wolke am Himmel, Temperaturen gut über 30 °C und wie gehabt tolle Stimmung im Publikum. Perfekt! Auf dem Gelände gab’s nicht nur genügend Trinkwasserstellen, sondern auch eine Sonnencreme-Eincreme-Station. Wenn das kein Service ist? Und dazu Gratis-Promo-Sonnenhüte von verschiedenen Firmen und die Bitte der Moderatoren, doch bitte genug Wasser (oder wahlweise Bier) zu trinken.

Favez waren die erste Band der Hauptbühne, und sie wussten das Publikum so früh am Tage durchaus zu unterhalten! Kraftvolle Rockmusik, mit viel Energie vorgetragen. Dazu amüsante Ansagen auf Englisch oder in gebrochenem Deutsch – für eine Schweizer Band ja eher ungewöhnlich, aber wenn die Muttersprache Französisch ist, ist das vermutlich die beste Lösung. Gleich zu Beginn die Aufforderung: “Kommt doch näher! Wir haben heute morgen viele Duschen genommen!” Außerdem sollte sich das Publikum die T-Shirts ausziehen, falls noch nicht geschehen – “aber nur die Männer”! Mal was anderes… =;-) Dann bekamen wir noch Drachengeschichten erzählt, und natürlich war das Wetter ein Thema. “Seid Ihr zu kalt? Hier friert es ein bisschen!” Ein echt netter Auftritt, den man um die Tageszeit so eigentlich nicht erwartet hätte.

SinaDanach ging es mit Schweizer Künstlern weiter. Adrian Stern lockte eine beträchtliche Menge an Zuschauern vor die kleine Bühne, war in meinen Augen musikalisch aber ein wenig unspannend. Sina fuhr an der großen Bühne daraufhin ganz andere Kaliber auf: Mit Streichquartett und Gästen auf der Bühne bot sie eine kurzweilige Show. Auch das nicht unbedingt meine Musik, aber definitiv unterhaltsam.

Eigentlich wollte ich danach nur kurz an der kleinen Bühne reinhören und mir dann eine Pause gönnen – diesen Plan machten The Black Pacific aber zunichte. Die Band rund um den ehemaligen Pennywise-Sänger spielte knallharten Punkrock. Und wenn eine Band schon zu Revolution Rock von The Clash auf die Bühne kommt, kann da eigentlich nur ein tolles Konzert folgen – und genau so war es auch! Auch wenn wohl kaum jemand Lieder der Band kannte, war die Stimmung super. Und gegen die Unkenntnis hilft es, Lieder der Ramones zu covern – oder gleich “den ersten Rock-Song ever”, nämlich Johnny B. Goode. Und der Fauxpas, dass der Sänger in einer Reihe von Punkbands auch Simple Plan aufzählte, mit dem Kommentar “die spielen doch nachher auch noch” (dabei hatten sie kurzfristig abgesagt), wurde auch schnell verziehen. Ein Lied widmeten The Black Pacific den Opfern und Verletzten des Unglücks beim Pukkelpop-Festival.

KatzenjammerDann ein weiteres Highlight für mich: Katzenjammer! Die vier Norwegerinnen sind ja immer bezaubernd. Ihre Auftritte lassen sich nicht wirklich beschreiben – aber da sie ja quasi IMMER auf Tour sind, sollte sich das jeder einfach mal selbst ansehen! Sie eroberten Gampel im Sturm – der Platz vor der Bühne füllte sich, das Publikum sang lauthals mit, und alle waren voll und ganz bei der Sache. Katzenjammer betonten, dass sie ja von überall, wo sie auftreten, etwas mitnehmen und in ihre Lieder einbauen; daher die verschiedenen Stilrichtungen. Und wie schon Kaizers Orchestra am Tag zuvor, so verglichen auch Katzenjammer die Umgebung mit Norwegen – “aber hier ist es warm!” Neu am Ende des Konzertes eine kurze Band-Vorstellung, in der das Publikum die Namen ruft. Und dabei mit dem Hintern wackelt, denn “Ain’t no thang” heißt neuerdings “the butt song”. Hach ja, die Mädels sind einfach die geborenen Entertainer!

Und weiter ging es im erstklassigen Line-Up (Tag 3 war meiner Meinung nach der insgesamt bestbesetzte Festivaltag). Auf der kleinen Bühne waren The Subways an der Reihe. Die hatte ich ja letzte Woche schon beim Taubertal gesehen, und hier übertrafen sie ihren Auftritt noch einmal. Super Stimmung, extrem viel Energie, eine Punkrock-Show vom Allerfeinsten! Nur warum sie gerne mal als “Brit-Pop-Band” angekündigt werden, erschließt sich mir nicht so ganz.

Publikum bei Kool SavasAls nächster Act wären eigentlich Simple Plan an der Reihe gewesen. Da die jedoch kurzfristig absagen mussten, wurden sie von Kool Savas ersetzt. Punkrock ersetzen durch Hip Hop – geht das? Die Antwort ist: nun ja. Grundsätzlich ging es schon, ja, und die Stimmung vor der Bühne war extremst gut. Die ersten Reihen feierten, Kool Savas selbst fühlte sich auch schnell wohl (obwohl er sich seiner schwierigen Aufgabe voll und ganz bewusst war und sogar ohne eigene Crew vor Ort war, daher also improvisieren musste); sobald man aber ein wenig weiter nach hinten schaute, herrschte gähnende Leere. Bei fast allen “Nachmittags-Bands” war mehr vor der Hauptbühne los als beim Co-Head. Schade, denn Stimmung machte er durchaus, und er konnte auch Leute begeistern, die ihn überhaupt nicht kannten.

Guano ApesVielleicht wäre es besser gewesen, die Auftritte von Kool Savas und den Guano Apes zu tauschen. Die spielten nämlich auf der kleinen Bühne; und die wurde – wie nicht anders zu erwarten war – völlig überlaufen. Vorne ging es richtig rund, weiter hinten drängten sich die Zuschauer, um zumindest etwas sehen zu können. Die Apes lieferten eine energievolle Punkshow ab. Mich persönlich konnten sie nicht zu 100% überzeugen, was aber wohl mit daran lag, dass ich ihre neue Musik überhaupt nicht kenne; unglücklich fand ich aber, als erste Zugabe ein langes Instrumentalstück zu spielen, was die Stimmung doch ein wenig tötete. Und auch Lord of the Boards als letzte Zugabe zu spielen, während ein Großteil der Zuschauer schon auf dem Weg zur anderen Bühne ist, war vielleicht nicht die beste Wahl. Dennoch ein toller und zu Recht umjubelter Auftritt!

SeeedHeadliner des Abends waren Seeed aus Berlin. Und während ich ja die Auftritte der bisherigen Headliner ein wenig durchwachsen fand, war ich diesmal ziemlich begeistert. Wobei ich gestehen muss, dass meine Erwartungen ziemlich gering waren; ich habe Seeed schon einige Male live gesehen und immer wieder festgestellt, dass das live einfach nicht meine Musik ist – obwohl ich die Lieder im Radio gerne höre. Dieses Gefühl hatte ich diesmal definitiv nicht! Der Auftritt machte richtig Spaß, und das Publikum tanzte. Immer wieder wurden Lieder gecovert (bzw. “geremixt”), und die großen Hits fehlten natürlich auch nicht. Auf er Bühne kamen Seeed deutlich “seriöser” rüber als sonst oft (vielleicht war das auch ein Grund für mich, den Auftritt mehr genießen zu können). Mit einer großen Band im Hintergrund kamen sie in Anzügen auf die Bühne, und es wirkte mehr nach Konzertabend als nach Zirkusshow. Eindrucksvoll!

Zum Abschluss des Tages spielten noch Russkaja auf der kleinen Bühne. Wer die Band kennt, weiß, dass weitere Worte bezüglich Stimmung und Party überflüssig sind. Für alle anderen: Stimmung top, Party JA! Russkaja spielen eine Mischung aus Ska und osteuropäischen Rhythmen, dazu gibt es auf der Bühne ständig etwas zu sehen (wenn man denn neben dem Tanzen mal hinguckt), und Interaktion wird großgeschrieben. Ein fantastischer Abschluss eines tollen Tages!

 

Tag 4: “Oh my god, the Gaffa tape is melting down!”

Movits!Dass der Sonntagmorgen als “ein wenig schwierig” bezeichnet wird, ist nicht wirklich überraschend. Es ging früher los als an den anderen Tagen, und am vierten Festivaltag sind natürlich die Energiereserven des Publikums ziemlich aufgebraucht. Aber wie gehabt: strahlender Sonnenschein!

Und so fand sich auch um 11 Uhr morgens schon ein ordentliches Grüppchen an Zuschauern vor der Hauptbühne ein, um sich die Movits! anzuschauen. Drei Jungs aus Schweden, einer mit Saxofon, einer an den Turntables (bzw. manchmal auch an den Percussions oder der Gitarre), einer am Gesang. Zusammen ergab das dann eine wahnwitzige Mischung aus Hip Hop und Elektro – und zwar auf Schwedisch. Das Publikum verstand daher nicht wirklich etwas, feierte aber trotzdem, denn die Musik lud absolut zum Tanzen ein. Die Schweden waren selbst wohl diejenigen, die am meisten unter der Hitze litten; verständlich bei gerade mal 10 °C in Nordschweden zurzeit. Und als dann auch noch das Gaffa-Tape, mit dem das Banner aufgehängt war, wegschmolz… =;-) Ein super Auftakt für den Abschlusstag!

Ich+IchDas darauffolgende Programm musste kurzfristig umgestellt werden, da Ich+Ich erst verspätet ankommen würden – ich nutzte die Gelegenheit, um meinen Bericht weiterzuschreiben, bevor ich dann zu Ich+Ich wieder vor der Bühne stand. Und ich muss gestehen: Im ersten Moment war ich völlig verwirrt. Ich weiß nicht sicher, mit wem ich sie verwechselt habe (ich tippe auf 2raumwohnung, aber ohne den geringsten Schimmer, warum man die verwechseln sollte…), aber ich erwartete etwas ganz anderes. Das war aber definitiv nicht negativ, denn natürlich sagte mir – nachdem es endlich “klick” gemacht hatte – auch Ich+Ich etwas, und das sagte mir deutlich mehr zu als das, was ich erwartet hatte. Im immer noch strahlenden Sonnenschein lieferten Ich+Ich eine tolle Show und brachten das Publikum zum Mitsingen; wobei es schade war, dass das Publikum nur direkt vor der Bühne wirklich engagiert schien.

The BaseballsAls Hauptband des Sonntags fungierten The Baseballs. Und die schafften es, dem Festival einen fulminanten Abschluss zu bescheren! Vor der Bühne war es sehr gut gefüllt (für Sonntag nachmittag jedenfalls), und das Publikum kümmerte sich nicht um Hitze und Sonnenbrand, tanzte ausgiebig und sang begeistert mit. Während die Band sich durch ihr Programm blödelte… und nein, das ist nicht negativ gemeint, sondern war super sympathisch und extremst unterhaltsam. Mittendrin sollte das Publikum geschlossen Dinge in die Luft werfen (zum Großteil waren das natürlich die gelben Fächer-/Frisbee-Teile, die gratis verteilt wurden und ständig in der Luft rumflogen), was beeindruckend aussah. Und am Ende fing bei dem heißen Auftritt sogar noch das Klavier Feuer (was aber erstaunlich wenig panische Reaktionen hervorrief und sich nach Ende des Liedes auch durch einfaches Pusten wieder löschen ließ… da werden doch nicht etwa Special Effects am Werk gewesen sein??). Die Stimmung war auf jeden Fall phänomenal, und die Baseballs ein würdiger Headliner für den letzten Tag!

Zu allerletzt spielten auf der kleinen Bühne noch Z’Hansrüedi Endfrenz, worauf ich aufgrund der langen Heimreise aber verzichtete. Die Baseballs hätten sie vermutlich eh nicht mehr toppen können!

 

Fazit

AchterbahnMit insgesamt 85.000 Besuchern (zwischen 16.000 und 26.000 pro Tag) war das Open Air Gampel das größte Festival, das ich dieses Jahr besucht habe (die Festivals, wo ich nur einen Tag war, mal ausgenommen). Das an sich ist für mich immer erst mal ein Minuspunkt, denn ich liebe kleine, übersichtliche Festivals ohne lange Wege. Aber: Trotz der Besucherzahl fällt das Gampel ganz klar in diese Kategorie! Das Gelände ist trotz der Größe überschaubar, die Wege von einer Bühne zur anderen sind absolut machbar (auch wenn es sich an den Durchgängen zwischen zwei Bands manchmal ein bisschen staut – dann geht man halt hinten rum, was zwar ein Stückchen weiter ist, aber immer noch erträglich). Am ersten Tag fand ich das Gelände auch abends beim Headliner noch angenehm leer und man kam überall problemlos durch – allerdings war der erste Tag, da Donnerstag, auch derjenige, wo die wenigsten Leute auf dem Gelände waren. Am Freitag- und Samstagabend war es doch deutlich voller, und wenn man auf einer Seite der Bühne war, wollte man nicht unbedingt an die Essensbude an der anderen Seite. =;-) Dennoch: Ein Durchkommen war immer möglich und das Gelände wirkte nie überfüllt. Und gut gefüllt ist schließlich super für die Stimmung!

PublikumDas Publikum war insgesamt sehr angenehm – ich habe keine Pöbeleien erlebt und sehr wenige Besucher, die sich rücksichtslos durch die Menge gedrückt haben. Beide Daumen hoch dafür! Und die Stimmung war insgesamt super. Teilweise ließ das Interesse an den Bands weiter hinten zwar stark nach, aber vor der Bühne wurde immer getanzt und gefeiert.

Die gesamte Organisation passte absolut. Zum Camping und zu den Shuttlebussen kann ich nicht viel sagen, da ich’s nicht genutzt habe, aber “aus der Ferne” sah alles super organisiert aus. Auf dem Gelände selbst gab’s absolut keine Kritikpunkte. Man hätte auf den Leinwand hin und wieder den Spielplan einblenden können, insbesondere nach der Programmänderung am Sonntag, aber das war’s auch schon an Kritik.

Open Air GampelZum Programm brauche ich nichts mehr sagen, denn das war absolut top! Interessant fand ich die Spielzeiten: Alle Bands bekamen 60 Minuten, die Headliner 75 Minuten. Das hatte Vor- und Nachteile. Für die Bands früh am Tage war es natürlich toll, ein komplettes Konzert spielen zu können; wobei das für die Zuschauer aber auch lang werden konnte, wenn man die Band so gar nicht kannte. Für die Headliner war die Zeit oft zu kurz; denn das sind ja die “Zugpferde”, wegen denen man sich entschieden hat, zum Festival zu fahren, und nach einer guten Stunde ist schon alles vorbei. Pro und contra hält sich da also die Waage – fair ist diese Aufteilung aber auf jeden Fall.

Das Open Air Gampel ist in der Schweiz als sehr teures Festival bekannt/verschrien/was auch immer. Mir fehlt der Vergleich zu anderen aktuellen Schweizer Festivals – ich als Euro-Ausländerin empfand das Preisniveau natürlich als sehr sehr hoch. 5 Franken (zurzeit ca. 4,40 Euro) für eine Cola, 10 Franken für einen Döner oder Vergleichbares? Das ist happig. Dazu kommen ständige Zusatzkosten für z.B. Shuttlebusse, Duschen und ähnliches. Da wird man im Laufe eines Wochenendes schon einiges los – wobei man aber durchaus auch sparen kann, wenn man möchte. Mit Gratis-Trinkwasser und diversen Promo-Artikeln (Cola-Döschen, Chips, Kaugummis) kommt man ja schon recht weit. Meine beste Investition des Festivals: 1,5 Franken für einen Schoko-Milchshake und einen Gratis-Sonnenhut. =;-)
Rock FoodWas für Festivals eher ungewöhnlich ist: Das Essen war größtenteils wirklich hochwertig. Wenn man also 10 Franken für ein Mittagessen hinlegt, dann bekommt man dafür auch etwas, was gut schmeckt und wovon man satt wird. Und das ist doch das Wichtigste!

Insgesamt also ganz klar beide Daumen hoch fürs Festival! “Einmal Gampel, immer Gampel”? Ja, wenn das Line-Up stimmt, dann sehr gerne! Und die Line-Up-Einschränkung kommt bei mir nur dadurch zustande, dass sechs Stunden Anfahrt doch irgendwie gerechtfertigt werden müssen. Aber bei dem tollen Händchen fürs Booking in diesem Jahr habe ich da fürs nächste Jahr eigentlich gar keine großen Bedenken… bis 2012 also!

04/05.09.2009 Preview Verket-Festival (Mo i Rana)

July 2009. I just returned from my vacation in Norway – including an absolutely amazing concert of Kaizers Orchestra at Månefestivalen in Fredrikstad. And coming back home from vacation is always bad – especially, if you don’t have another vacation planned, no concert trip, nothing. Just work to look forward to…

This and the fact that I assume Kaizers will take another break now made me think – there must be some other festival show I can see this summer, right? So I checked the dates. Almost all shows were in the next two, three weeks. Hrmpf. I mean, I have a great job and can take days off whenever I like most of the time. But then, I DO have to work once in a while inbetween my trips. And I can’t come home from vacation and go back to Norway the next week, that feels stupid.

I checked the dates again. Hmm, this Verket festival at the beginning of September? That would be the perfect time. I can allow myself another weekend trip then, can’t I? And most probably it’s gonna be the last show before the break, another reason to go there. I thought I remembered that I had considered this show before but dismissed the thought before it could really settle. Why was that? And by the way, where in Norway is Mo i Rana?

A few minutes and a short visit to Google Maps later the memory of why I had dismissed the thought was back, and somehow the date didn’t seem quite that perfect anymore…

But hey, I don’t call myself Konzertjunkie for nothing! There’s trains to Bodø, right? So it’s gonna be affordable. Hey, and they can’t take much more than… uh, 16 hours from Oslo. *cough* OK, maybe flying is a better alternative. Hey, and not even that expensive!

To cut it short: Three days later I had found a pretty good flight connection that would get me to Bodø Friday afternoon and back to Germany by Monday afternoon. And even affordable! AND: I had convinced a friend to come along! 🙂 (Well, if you can call “Festival? Kaizers? YES of course, I’m almost done booking, when was that again???” convincing… *lol*)

So, now I’m going up to Mo i Rana to see Kaizers play at Verketfestival. And because you can’t travel that far just to see one band, I’m going to Bodø Friday, gonna meet my friend there, we’ll hire a car to go down to Mo i Rana, might catch (hopefully!) a bit of the festival on Friday night already, have a nice day visiting the area on Saturday, a GREAT evening with even better music and concerts, and then we’ll have the whole Sunday to drive back to Bodø and see a bit of Nordlandet. Jippie, I am SO looking forward!

Oh, but this was actually supposed to be about the festival a bit here as well… 😉
So, Verket will take place for the first time this year, so it’s gonna be really interesting. In general, I have the feeling that (especially small) festivals in Norway are organized much better than in Germany. But then, for the first time? We’ll see how that works out. It won’t be perfect, probably, but then it is gonna be small, which is something that I love. 🙂
And the program got a lot to offer: On Friday, it’s gonna be Katzenjammer (who we will miss, most probably :(), Marit Larsen, CC Cowboys, and Paperboys. And on Saturday I guess I’ll just HAVE to check out Alexander Rybak, then Hjaltalin from Iceland will be there (I saw them at Slottsfjell and liked them pretty good), and as headliners The September When and Kaizers. What else could you wish for? 🙂

So, I can’t wait! I have to admit though that it does feel a bit strange to go up to the arctic circle for a festival just because Kaizers play there – especially now, since it’s been confirmed that they will play a free festival close to Oslo the same weekend – but hey, we are gonna have so much more fun up there! *g*

Time for the last Kaizers Orchestra concert of the summer! It took place at Verket festival, a new festival, arranged for the first time, in Mo i Rana in Norway. When I checked the line-up, it wasn’t hard to decide that this was a good festival to go to: Kaizers Orchestra, Katzenjammer, The September When, CC Cowboys, Alexander Rybak, and some more. OK, Mo i Rana isn’t really the most practical place to go to for me, I admit that – but then, it was plain out crazy to travel up to the arctic circle just for a festival. And crazy is good, so I was on my way…

Eight hours and three flights later I was in Bodø, where I met up with a friend and got into the car to drive three and a half hours south to Mo i Rana. On a very tight schedule – we wanted to catch Katzenjammer, who played way too early, namely about three and a half hours after I landed in Bodø… That didn’t leave us much time. On the drive, I got my first glimpse of Nordlandet (ok, I’ve been up north before, but still, it was impressive!), crossed the arctic circle (from north to south, duh…), and learned new words like “råkjøre”. Uhem. But hey, we made it just in time!

We arrived at the festival about ten minutes before Katzenjammer were supposed to start, and as they were a few minutes late, we had enough time to get in and look around a bit. Perfect! And even though it was raining quite badly at that time and the ground was wet and muddy already, I liked the festival area. Lots of space, clearly arranged, and a perfect slope down towards the stage where you could see very well. And as a background, high above the stage, some factory buildings of the industry park, which gave the festival its name.

The only thing missing was: people. This was really bad during the Katzenjammer concert – it looked like there was hardly anyone there! A few people scattered in front of the stage, but that was it, and I already had the feeling that this might be the first and last time the festival took place…

But then, it was pouring, and it was early the first day. It turned out that this really was nothing to worry about! By the evening, the area was crowded, and even more so the next day. Probably not sold out, but lots of people that were clearly enjoying themselves. And the area could take that amount of people, so you didn’t feel like it was so crowded that you couldn’t move, or that you would have to stand in line forever to get a drink. Perfect! And all in all, the festival was very well organized. I never had to wait in line anywhere, and even though the voluntary helpers couldn’t answer all questions, everybody was very friendly and helpful. And I had the feeling that especially the securities knew exactly what they were doing, and this is something that is a) very important and b) not that common, especially at Norwegian festivals. But yeah, that’s the way it’s gotta be, so two thumbs up for Verket!

But back to the concerts. Katzenjammer started about 10 minutes late, and this was actually the case throughout the festival – all bands started a bit late. But it wasn’t too bad, so no reason to complain. And well, there’s not much I can write about Katzenjammer: Go and see them NOW! This band is just amazing, and everybody in the (way too small…) audience was enjoying themselves. Great! You hardly noticed the rain, at least not until the concert stopped and you suddenly noticed that you were soaked wet and started to get cold as soon as you stopped dancing…

So we left the festival for a bit – even though we noticed that there were actually TWO stages, the big main stage and a very small one that was obviously only used in the afternoon for the unknown bands. The one that played right after Katzenjammer, Diskotek, sounded very good, but we had to leave to check in at our hotel and get something to eat. Oh, and to dry up a bit…

Luckily, the rain had mostly stopped when we returned to the festival in the evening. It took us quite a while to walk out there from the town – it would have been a good idea to mark it a bit clearer on the website where the festival would actually take place and where the entry was, that would have made it easier for non-locals to find an accommodation close to the festival. Not everybody knows where Revelneset is… But with a bit of asking and walking in the wrong direction a few times, we made it back to the festival in time to catch a few songs of Marit Larsen‘s concert.

I have to admit that I didn’t know her at all, even though I’m German… But I liked what I heared! It’s not really my kind of music, but it was performed perfectly, and it was an impressive concert. After that, it was time for CC Cowboys. I only knew that they were supposed to be great live – apart from that, I had never heard anything from them. So I didn’t know a single song. Oh, and I didn’t know how they looked, otherwise I would have known right away who was that band that was on my plane from Oslo. 😉 It was a bit sad that I didn’t know any of the songs – but I promise, next time I am in Norway (and in a town with a record store), I’ll get a CD. That was a great concert! I liked the music a lot, there was something to see, and the people in the audience were having fun. Just the way it’s gotta be!

The last band of the night was Paperboys, and as I’m not into hip hop at all and we both were terribly tired, we went home after thirty minutes or so. Especially as it seemed like Paperboys were still playing their first song. 😉

We spent the next day relaxing and checking out Mo i Rana – a much bigger place than we thought, but still pretty small. But nice, no question about it! Then I wanted to go back to the festival to see Alexander Rybak. Not really my music either, but one of the few Norwegians that are actually known in Germany, so you can’t miss out on him! My friend warned my that there would probably be lots of “small kids” there – well, okay, what are you gonna expect if you have a young cute man who got famous through the Grand Prix? Of course there would be lots of teenagers in the front, screaming their lungs out!

Uhm. When we arrived at the festival, I understood what she had meant with “small kids”. Namely: small kids! Six-year-olds, maybe up to ten years, and okay, there were a few teenagers as well. But mostly <10... And yes, I totally agree that he deserves "better" - not that there was anything bad about playing for kids, but his music is really good and would appeal to an older audience as well. So maybe he should have been placed twice in the program, once in the afternoon and once in the evening, and not only in the kids' part... a bit sad. After this concert, everybody was sent out of the festival area. Until then, there was no age limit, but for the evening concerts, only people older than 18 were allowed. And of course, the only way to do that was to send everybody out. But there were two problems with that: First, Alexander Rybak did a signing session just inside of the entrance, so it was almost impossible to get out – and understandably, a lot of kids didn’t WANT to go out before they got their autograph. And second, once everybody was kicked out, they went home…

So the result was that when Hjaltalin played, nobody was there… They started much later than planned, but in the beginning, there were maybe three, four people in front of the stage. Including us two… It got a bit better then, but it was still ridiculous. Really sad. The concert was nice, but I have to admit that I liked them much better at Slottsfjell where they also played a few songs in Icelandic. And that’s much more interesting than English. Plus, it was freezing cold, so we went back to the hotel afterwards to warm up.

After we got something to eat and dressed up WARM, we were on the way back to Verket. Now it was time for the highlight: Kaizers Orchestra, of course! We had decided that we wanted to be in the front, and so we had to be there early. We arrived just when Jarle Bernhoft was playing his last song. The next band up was Ghost:Dog, and we just had time to grab some drinks and find a nice spot in the second row, with the hope of making it to the first. When I started out to take a picture of the stage, I noticed that I had forgotten my memory card in the camera back at the hotel… so that’s why there’s no pictures of the bands that played Saturday night. Sorry for that, my bad.

But then it was time for Ghost:Dog! I never heard of them, I had no clue what to expect, but it was a very nice concert! I was a bit distracted by watching the first row, though, but hey, you have to be prepared! *g* And yep, right after Ghost:Dog went off, we made it to the front. Yippieh! Time for another round of drinks, and then we were waiting for The September When.

I had seen them at Slottsfjell as well, but I hardly remembered any songs. That’s a bad sign… so no, I didn’t really like them. It was an okay concert, no question about it – and in the middle of the show, they introduced a “guest singer” on stage: Janove Ottesen! That was pretty cool of course, and he sang most of the song. But the song still was rather boring… Well, just not my kind of music, I guess.

And then it was time for the BIG THING! Kaizers Orchestra came on, they delivered a great show, they brought out Morten Abel as guest, and it was really really crowded and “pushy” in the front. But it was great fun! You can read all about it here.

Yep, and that was it! Suddenly, Verket was over… way too soon, there could have been a third day… All in all, it was really a great festival, especially if you consider that it took place for the first time. The organization was great, the area was great, and the weather was… way too cold. But well, that’s Northern Norway in September, not much of a surprise.

The next day we spent traveling back to Bodø and stopping everywhere along the road. And everything was closed… 🙁 At least the way to Svartisen, a glacier, and the grottos. So please, next time, have Verket a week earlier (everything closed on August 31st… *sigh*), so that people traveling to the area get to see something as well!

But still, we had a great trip back to Bodø. We crossed the arctic circle again, this time in the “right” direction. Of course, I had to balance on the arctic circle, and I learned that its purpose is actually to hold the northern lights in so that they don’t get to the south, and that north of the arctic circle, rainbows appear upside-down. And a few more useful things as well. *g* We even managed to go by Saltstraumen and were impressed – guess we accidentally caught just the right time where it was strongest.

An my Konzertjunkie festival rating ;): Verket is a great festival, well-organized and obviously with a good hand for booking the right bands. Currently it seems like a fairly local festival though. There were almost only Norwegian bands in the line-up (something that I personally like a lot, so I don’t think this should be changed), so maybe it is aimed at locals only. And as it seems to work – why not? To draw people from abroad, there would have to be better ways to get to Mo i Rana (but well, there’s not so much you can do there, I guess ;)), and it would need to be a bit earlier in the year. That way, it might attract some tourists. But I assume that the festival is aimed at a local audience, and this is perfectly fine. It is a great festival, and I hope it will exist for a while!
